BODY SHAPE GUIDE

Apple Body Shape

An apple body shape (also called round) is defined by a fuller midsection with a less-defined waist, often with shoulders and bust that are relatively prominent compared to the hips. But remember: body shape is about your overall proportions, not your size or measurements.

The goal isn’t to “correct” your shape — it’s simply to understand which proportions and silhouettes you enjoy wearing most.

Is This Your Body Shape?

You may have an apple body shape if your midsection is fuller than your hips and shoulders, with less waist definition.

Your bust and shoulders are often relatively prominent.

Your waist is less defined than your bust and hips.

Your hips and legs tend to look slimmer in comparison to your upper body.

Your body shape is about proportion — not weight, size or measurements.

The Apple Styling Principle

When dressing an apple shape, an easy starting point is to create a long, flowing vertical line and let fabric skim rather than cling around the middle. This doesn’t mean you need to cover up — small details like neckline, layering and fabric drape can make a big difference.

Think of these as styling tools, not rules. The best outfit is always the one that makes you feel comfortable and like yourself.

Styles to Wear More Intentionally

These styles aren’t “wrong” for an apple shape. They may simply cling or add bulk in ways you’re not going for.

  • ×Tight, clingy fabrics at the waist — Fabrics with no give can highlight areas you may want to skim over.
  • ×Bulky layering at the middle — Stacking thick fabric around the midsection can add visual bulk.
  • ×Skinny belts worn tightly at the natural waist — These can emphasise rather than soften the midsection.
  • ×Cropped tops without a layering piece — Worn alone, they can shorten the torso and draw focus inward.

What Tends to Work Well

Create a vertical line — Long cardigans, open jackets and vertical seams draw the eye up and down.

Choose empire waistlines — A seam just below the bust skims over the middle beautifully.

Go for V-necks and open collars — These lengthen the neckline and soften the upper body.

Layer with structure — A blazer or open jacket adds shape without clinging.

Look for flowing, soft fabrics — Fabric with drape moves over the body instead of clinging.

Highlight your legs — Well-fitted trousers or skirts can bring balance to the silhouette.
